But that's exactly my point--if we continue to focus on "saving lives" through extreme measures rather than on improving the overall well-being of the individuals in our society, we've lost. We've lost! Overlooking the most important parts of health and wellness in favor of such measures will lead us to continuing to having to come up with more and more "life saving" measures.

I am interested in a solution which will only come if people understand the reality that health maintenance is REQUIRED for survival and that we can avoid many of the human tragedies and suffering and the expensive and invasive procedures we are famous for in this country.

As an aside, there is no guarantee that a flu shot WOULD have saved her life, only that it COULD have, and I agree--there is a small chance. However, if she had been given the flu shot and it was not effective, the report would have read, "We did all we could and she died anyway." Evidence of effectiveness of the flu shot in the peer-reviewed literature is lacking and yet it remains the primary means of "prevention". We can do better.Steve Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10431606039483899730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-30088498931434512622011-11-13T15:35:54.293-08:002011-11-13T15:35:54.293-08:00I appreciate your focus on whole body health, some...I appreciate your focus on whole body health, something that is so important. I am concerned though by the impression this post gives that the flu shot is something to be avoided. I immediately thought of a young mother who passed away from complications from the swine flu in our icu during the swine flu epidemic. Although a healthy diet and lifestyle would have been important to her as well, a flu shot could have saved her life.dr_b_rockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18289799049194148431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-2179746498890226762011-10-26T23:15:24.750-07:002011-10-26T23:15:24.750-07:00Cassia, as always a wealth of information, perspec...Cassia, as always a wealth of information, perspective, and insight, thank you.

I do appreciate the perspective of the author for this specific Cochrane Review. I agree that seeing a review on children and elderly and flu vaccinations would be worth reading. Granted, I don't always agree with the conclusions offered by the Cochrane Review (don't bother reading the review on chiropractic, the perspective is lacking) which brings me to the point that science can be and very often is extremely subjective.

As much as many people would like to believe that science can offer some sort of definitive conclusion about reality (what is), science is in fact subjective. Science is limited to the current perspectives of those conducting the research. Science supports or doesn't current ideas, it doesn't recognize questions that have not been asked which more often than not are more relevant than the ones that are being asked (i.e. drug research)... Science is at the mercy of the limitations of the current belief systems (and funding) of the researchers. I put less and less stock in research anymore because it's so fickle, changing with every researcher.

...and don't get me started on what "healthy" means in peer-reviewed, published literature, it'd be a week's worth of posts on that topic alone.Nataliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11893485007089750738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-43747977638022437932011-10-26T08:03:11.820-07:002011-10-26T08:03:11.820-07:00Thought you'd like this Cochrane review of the...Thought you'd like this Cochrane review of the research on flu shots for healthy adults:
http://www2.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab001269.html (that doesn't give the whole article, just the abstract basically).

I appreciate that they point out that almost half the research was funded by vaccine companies and that those articles tended to have the best outcomes. Also that even with that the review didn't find a big different in *serious* complications, though there was a difference in work days lost and mild complications. Very interesting to see. As always, I appreciate your comments, I ...Cassia,

As always, I appreciate your comments, I totally see where you are coming from as far as the impression that wellness covers everything, and my response is that in all reality, with few exceptions, it may just be that good. Let me explain:

I do recognize the reality of organisms which can cause illness (infection was one of the leading killers prior to the 20th century). HIV, however, is a special case as far as viruses (viri?) go.

I also recognize that there are rare genetic problems that people are born with (which are exhibited at birth like trisomy 21 and sickle cell anemia), but for far greater than 90% of us, we got here with great genes.

I fully recognize genetic variance and that some of us have genetic susceptibilities to certain illnesses if supplied with the specific environmental trigger and without that environmental trigger the sickness doesn't exist. When people become sick in this manner should we blame the genes or the poor environment?

When we (the >90%) have problems, it is the direct result of living in an environment incongruent with our genes. Our genes were suited for a certain environment, and when we supply an environment that our genes were not intended for (think industrial conditions like those in America) we experience illness (symptomatic or asymptomatic). Some illnesses develop slowly over time creating a false sense of security until the symptoms appear leaving the afflicted completely baffled as to the cause (this is the heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, depression, infertility, ADD, ADHD, acne, acid reflux, strokes, metabolic syndrome, dementia, etc, basically anything you see advertised during the NEWS).

I had not intended the concepts of wellness to mean that nothing bad will ever happen. What I meant to say is that whatever condition you are dealing with will absolutely be improved with lifestyle (improving the environment of how you eat, move, and think).

Will Eating, Moving, and Thinking Well remove the symptoms of the disease? It depends on what extent the damage has been done.

Will doing these things move you towards health regardless of your condition? Every time without exception.

The problem is that because of our culture and our lifestyles, most people in America have never experienced Eating, Moving, and Thinking in the ways I'm proposing, most people have never had the experience of being truly WELL. In industrial environments most people think they are doing well and are actually far from. They think they are healthy, but they are actually "just not sick".Steve Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10431606039483899730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-1732393128539572012010-11-28T17:27:48.229-08:002010-11-28T17:27:48.229-08:00I think this is a good step. I agree - treating t...I think this is a good step. I agree - treating the symptoms (including cancer) should be only part of the attack.

I do feel like this may over-simplify things though. I think the idea is generally applicable, but the feeling I'm getting (in this post and overall) is that if you just do the right things (food, environment, movement, positive thoughts, proper alignment) then you will always have complete wellness unless you have a physical accident. Maybe this isn't what is meant, but it is what the posts seem to be saying to me.

But sometimes an illness comes anyway, even if you're trying to do all the right things. I'm thinking especially when germs are involved. Often, when our bodies are strong, we are able to take care of germs before they overwhelm our body and we never notice it ourselves. But sometimes it doesn't work that way. Sometimes it is determined more by what you are exposed to (despite what precautions you may take) or even your genes. Take HIV. Though it often comes because of a life-style choice, that is not always the case. And having an amazing immune system doesn't exactly help as the virus feeds on the immune cells that are supposed to be stopping viruses. But some people are immune still because, genetically, their cells are resistant to the virus. Or, to take the garden analogy, sometimes the very things that make the soil perfect for your garden plants actually makes it extremely perfect for weeds too.

So I do agree with the idea. I just take issue with the "this covers *everything*" feel I'm getting. :)Cassiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16472806241533656422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-40491891828008755922010-11-18T21:48:07.401-08:002010-11-18T21:48:07.401-08:00Judloved,

However, if you will read other posts on my blog, you will gather my intent which is to say that any drug or surgery treatment of an already existing cancer (or any other disease) does NOTHING to affect the real problem. Dr. Hyman is of a similar opinion and his article is definitely worth a read.

The real problem as I hinted at is that MOST of these diseases are highly preventable and treatment without addressing the reason the disease was able to exist is a disservice to the "health" care consumer.

When you supply a healthy environment, the natural expression is health, this is entirely left out of treatments focusing on drugs and/or surgery.

Here is a summary:

http://balancedbodyandmind.blogspot.com/2010/08/wellness-made-simple.html

In health,

Dr. Steve PerrySteve Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10431606039483899730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-43726688410199760872010-11-18T11:58:10.308-08:002010-11-18T11:58:10.308-08:00I agree that the abuse of drugs such as Hydrocodon...I agree that the abuse of drugs such as Hydrocodone can impair the health of the patient, but it is also clear to say that are prescribed by the doctor as the most effective against pain, and disease of cancer needs to be counteracted in this way for the type of pain suffered by the patient, says Findrxonline this is determined by the doctor.Judlovedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11579267064932313112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-80391703629649998442010-10-14T13:10:36.780-07:002010-10-14T13:10:36.780-07:00Awesome post Dr. Perry!Awesome post Dr. Perry!Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10592329982211075412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-52740000761007767792010-10-13T20:03:36.101-07:002010-10-13T20:03:36.101-07:00Jodi, thank you for your comments, always a pleasu...Jodi, thank you for your comments, always a pleasure to read, especially from someone right in the middle of it like you are.

It's great to have your perspective. Also, thanks for getting into some of the things I just didn't have the space to mention - like the side-effects (Guillan-Barre) of some of these treatments.

Like yourself, I have decided that the flu shot is no longer worth it. I made the decision in 2005 when I realized that the worst I felt all year was after the flu shot. I thought - why am I going to pay to feel sick?

So that was that and I haven't looked back. Thanks again for your post - I hope people realize that despite all the advertising, they DO have a choice in NOT getting the flu shot and they CAN do more to help their body naturally.Steve Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10431606039483899730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-41751832853454050582010-10-13T07:30:56.157-07:002010-10-13T07:30:56.157-07:00Good post! This lasts from Nov. to March but I find it silly. They say it is because we could be carriers of the flu if we don't get a shot. Phooey! In the past, I have gotten the flu shot without any adverse side effects. My children have had flu-mist without problems. My hubby becomes deathly ill with the flu shot and refuses to get another. This year, though, I will not be getting a flu shot. They have combined it with the H1N1 vaccine and that is scary! We have seen and heard of many cases of Guillian Barre after getting the shot as well as
being sick for 10 days afterwards. No thanks-I'll wear the mask. I agree with you-just take care of yourself.Jodihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17903223337794218655noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-16693250497650443742010-10-10T09:21:32.552-07:002010-10-10T09:21:32.552-07:00Katherine, thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

In an upcoming post, I'll discuss the vast number of other Americans who have a very similar experience -- and people just aren't aware of that reality.

I'm excited for you and the choices you made/are making. Indeed, every little bit helps. I find it amazing how much better people feel when they change just a few, small, easy things. I love that because they are propelled to make even more changes over time and soon, they don't even recognize the person they used to be.

Just remember - it's not a race! There is time to change everything, but not today. Picking one thing at a time and being proud of your improvement is enough. (It's far easier to ADD positive things first rather than removing the negative.)

Saying you'll change everything in one shot (although admirable for the rare person who can keep it up) is actually the recipe for failure because when people have one slip up many of them decide to bag the whole thing. Ouch!

So, good job, keep it up!Steve Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10431606039483899730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-26107958419442566282010-10-08T12:42:09.433-07:002010-10-08T12:42:09.433-07:00Well said.Well said.Katherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17275384594336484804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536559669762694556.post-12823042160400510772010-10-07T11:12:37.332-07:002010-10-07T11:12:37.332-07:00ever since a flu shot put my grandma's heart i...ever since a flu shot put my grandma's heart in cardiac arrest resulting in her death, i have tried to stay clear of them all together.
